STATEMENT of REQUIREMENTS (SOR) for new design based on the W17; to be potentially competitive in Under 20ft Class for the Everglades Challenge (EC) and Race to Alaska (R2AK)

1. Be a relatively simple and inexpensive boat to build in a backyard / garage. 

2. Be seaworthy enough to transit Hecate Strait (BC Pacific Coast), in winds up around 20 knots and able to survive and or run for shelter in stronger winds.

3. Can be sailed by one competent person. 

4. Capacity for 2 people plus food, water and gear in heavy weather. 

5. Capable of 15 kts in ideal conditions. 

6. Have a large sail plan for light winds. 

7. Capable of human propulsion in calm conditions with goal of approx. 3 kts 

8. Be trailerable by a mid sized car or minivan. 

9. To be demountable or preferably folding, but decision is not to degrade other requirements

10. Can shelter one person while under way from rain and waves.   (A protected bunk for one)

11. Can tack through ~90 degrees upwind with the board down and make windward progress with the board up. 

12. Design to be configured for the possibility of righting without outside assist although it is acknowledged that this may not prove practical or possible.

13. Design to be also suitable for shallow water and be beachable for the Everglades start.
